THE SPARKS BROTHERS
Documentary Feature Film

Stop motion animated sequences for ‘The Sparks Brothers’, the documentary feature from director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver) about cult American pop band Sparks. Premiered at Sundance 2021, Screened at SXSW, San Francisco Documentary Festival and Hot Docs. Financed by MRC, distributed by Focus Features in the US and Universal Pictures internationally. Joseph’s animated sequences were described as ‘hilarious’ and ‘cinematic’ by leading UK film critic Mark Kermode and were nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Animation at the Cinema Eye Honours in New York in 2022. The film won Best Music Film at the 2022 NME Awards and Most Compelling Living Subject at the Critics' Choice Documentary Awards.

According to “print-the-myth” legend, John Lennon rang Ringo Starr to tell him that Marc Bolan was performing with Adolf Hitler – an anecdote hilariously brought to life on screen by animator Joseph Wallace (with cheeky voice cameos from Nick Frost and Simon Pegg). Having worked dark wonders on the video for Sparks’s 2017 single Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me), Wallace mixes stop-motion puppetry with paper collage cutouts, ensuring that Wright’s film remains as cinematic as its subjects.
